South of Réthymno

The area south of Réthymno is well worth exploring by car, but its major attraction can be visited by public or tour bus. Moní Arkadíou ¡ [map] (Arkádi Monastery; daily June–Aug 9am–8pm, Apr–May and Sept–Oct 9am–7pm, Nov 9am–5pm, Dec–Mar 9am–4pm; http://arkadimonastery.gr) lies in the Psilorítis foothills some 23km (14 miles) southeast of Réthymno. It was founded in the Byzantine era, although its present buildings date from the late 16th century, and is revered by Cretans as a nationalist shrine.
